Fayetteville – New River Gorge and Sophia opened the District 4 Little League Minor (8-10) Softball All-Star Tournament with convincing wins Friday night at Fayetteville Town Park.
The host team knocked off Beckley, while Sophia took down Shady Spring.
Alaina Malcomb had a double and three RBI to lead New River Gorge, while Jacey Hypes had to hits and two RBI.
Zoey Moore had a hit and drove in two runs.
Noella Oliver, Alexia Malcomb, Rylee Thomas and Lydia Menei each had one RBI. Oliver also had a double and picked up the win allowing just one earned run with eight strikeouts.
Adalynn Taylor had two hits for Beckley and Kiley Jo Brown had an RBI.
Kylee Holt and Sophia Mahaffey paced the Sophia All-Stars in game two driving in six runs each.
Both players were perfect at the plate with Mahaffey going 5-for-5 and Holt getting four hits in her four plate appearances.
Hailey Hall had three hits and three RBI, while Peyton Chandler collected two hits and also had three RBI.
Play resumes Friday night with Fayetteville and Sophia playing at 6 p.m. Beckley and Shady Spring will play an elimination game at 8 p.m.
