WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – Senator Joe Manchin urged President Joe Biden to end his reelection campaign during an appearance on Sunday, marking a significant moment in the ongoing Democratic unrest regarding Biden’s chances in the upcoming November election.
Manchin, an Independent from West Virginia who previously left the Democratic Party, expressed his thoughts on “This Week” with co-anchor Martha Raddatz. He stated that he made this decision “with a heavy heart,” noting that a growing number of Democrats have echoed similar sentiments following last month’s debate, creating a challenging environment for Biden.
“Initially, I thought the president needed time to assess whether he would continue,” Manchin explained. “Then I began to hear from my colleagues in tough districts and states who have started to speak out. It’s also evident that donors are indicating a preference for a different direction.”
Manchin suggested that stepping aside now could enable Biden to focus on critical issues he has emphasized, such as national unity, resolving the conflict in Gaza, and supporting Ukraine against Russia. He added that this would also demonstrate an orderly transition of power from the world’s superpower.
“He will leave a legacy that stands out, being recognized as one of the finest and a truly patriotic American,” Manchin stated. “Thus, I come with a heavy heart, believing the time has come for him to pass the torch to a new generation.”
