FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – One man was successfully rescued following an ATV accident in a remote area of Fayette County.
According to the Ansted Fire Department, at 11:30 PM on September 21, 2024, Fayette County Vertical Rescue was dispatched to an ATV accident involving entrapment in a remote area near Shawver Bridge Road.
The scene was located in a rugged, hard-to-reach area, accessible only by ATVs, which presented significant challenges for the rescue operation.
Fire departments from Ansted, Fayetteville, Oak Hill, Nuttall, Pax, and Danese responded to the call.
Equipped with chainsaws, portable extrication tools, rope gear, and medical equipment, the teams quickly mobilized to reach the patient, who was trapped in a ravine with his extremity pinned under the weight of his ATV.
Upon arrival, the rescuers stabilized the vehicle from above and used extrication tools to lift the machine, freeing the trapped limb.
The roof of the ATV was also removed to provide better access for safely extracting the patient.
He was then immobilized and placed in a litter, and with the help of a mechanical rope system, was carefully raised out of the ravine.
The patient was then loaded onto an ATV fitted with a med bed and began a challenging journey over rocky terrain to reach an awaiting ambulance.
The steep terrain required the use of winches and additional ATVs for leverage to safely transport the patient.
Once on more stable ground, patient care was transferred to Jan-Care EMS members.
From the time of the initial call to the completion of the extrication, the entire rescue took one hour and five minutes.
