BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Tom Truman was appointed on Friday by the Raleigh County Commission to finish the term of former Raleigh County Prosecutor, Ben Hatfield.
The appointment came during a Special Session meeting of the commission held at 8:00am on Friday, November 1, 2024, and follows the recent resignation of Hatfield as prosecutor in the wake of allegations of misconduct.
“It’s an honor for us to have someone who’s had 30-plus years working with this court system,” said Raleigh County Commission President, Greg Duckworth, addressing Truman during the meeting. “Having your strength there is going to be really good moving forward. Thank you for that, thank you for your service and experience.”
When asked about what he hopes to bring the Raleigh County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, Truman cited his own past experience working under elected officials.
“You know, I worked under four elected prosecutors, and I think that’s a big advantage. Because they each had something to bring to the office. In my head, I want to synthesize those things and do the best we can for the public.”
Truman is expected to remain in the prosecutor position until the close of 2026 barring the victory of a write-in candidate for the role of prosecutor in the upcoming General Election. Former Raleigh County Prosecutor, Ben Hatfield has indicated that should he secure victory in the election that he will decline to take on the Prosecuting Attorney role for the county.
