GLEN JEAN, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The superintendent of New River Gorge National Park & Preserve has issued a series of fire restrictions to prevent human-caused wildfires during a period of extreme fire danger.
These prohibitions apply to all National Park Service (NPS) lands within New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, Gauley River National Recreation Area, and Bluestone National Scenic River.
The following activities are now prohibited:
- Building or using fires, campfires, charcoal BBQs, or stove fires (except portable stoves using gas, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel) outside of established campgrounds.
- Smoking, except inside an enclosed vehicle.
- Welding or operating an open-flame torch without a permit.
- Possessing, discharging, or using fireworks or other incendiary devices.
- Operating motor vehicles or equipment without a spark arrestor.
Certain exemptions apply.
Individuals with a permit issued by the superintendent, federal and local officers, and rescue or firefighting personnel performing official duties are allowed to engage in otherwise restricted activities.
Campfires of an appropriate size within NPS-provided fire grates or rings at established campgrounds and picnic areas are also permitted.
These restrictions are effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice.
Park officials stress that these measures are essential to protect both natural resources and visitor safety.
