PINEVILLE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A hearing took place in Wyoming County Circuit Court on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, concerning a Petition for Injunctive Relief filed by Assistant Prosecutors Joshua Miller and Derek Laxton of the Wyoming County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office on behalf of the Wyoming County Board of Education.
The petition sought clarification on the allocation of ranking points for high school football teams this season.
Following negotiations with counsel for the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC), an agreement was presented to the court. The agreement stipulates that the court’s decision on the Board’s injunction request will be temporarily held in abeyance, allowing further actions from both parties. It also establishes that the WVSSAC’s position on ranking points allocation aligns with that of the Wyoming County Board of Education: the rules governing point distribution should remain consistent, as applied before and during the 2024 season.
The WVSSAC informed the court that it would file a Writ of Prohibition aiming to set aside a recent Wood County Circuit Court order, which had reverted the points system to the one used earlier in the year. If successful, the WVSSAC’s writ will enable Westside High School’s football team to compete in the 2024 State High School Football Playoffs.
“The young men on this team have earned the right to participate in postseason play, and we are hopeful the matter will be resolved fairly,” the Wyoming County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office stated.
