BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Beckley City Council on Tuesday voted to approve the Pinecrest Property Agreement with Raleigh County Commission, which was presented by way of an ordinance which was heard on its second reading during the meeting as well as a public hearing.
The ordinance passed on first reading at the previous Beckley City Council meeting earlier this month, with Councilwoman At-Large, Sherrie Hunter having been the lone dissenting voice among council members with regard to the ordinance. This trend continued during the most recent council meeting, with Councilwoman At-Large Hunter once again casting the sole vote in opposition to the ordinance.
Speaking with regard to the ordinance, Hunter extended her appreciation to members of the community and area students who took the time to make their voices heard at recent meetings with regard to the Pinecrest Industrial Park property.
“I want to thank the students; the coaches; the community – thank you for writing letters advocating for the preservation of the most unique cross-country course in West Virginia. I am proud of the students’ perseverance. They saw civics in action. I would bet that someday those students who spoke so eloquently will be on a ballot someday to be a part of their community governance,” said Hunter.
“We gave it our best shot. I’m proud of them. It didn’t go as we expected. I’m hopeful. I’m cautiously optimistic that the [Raleigh] County Commission will understand the importance of the cross-country course.”
Members of the Raleigh County Commission was initially expected to assemble for the next Regular Session meeting of the commission next week, with the first Regular Session meeting for the month of December scheduled to take place beginning at 10:00am on Tuesday. However, a Tuesday announcement by Raleigh County Administrator, Jay Quesenberry indicates that the upcoming meeting has been rescheduled and will now take place on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.
