BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – After over 70 years of business, the King Tut Drive-In has served its final round customers.
The popular Beckley establishment officially closed its doors on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, marking the end of an era.
King Tut has been a cherished hub for home-style food since its inception in the early 1940s by the Tutweiler family.
In 1955, a new chapter began as John McKay assumed ownership, solidifying the establishment’s place in the heart of the community.
The 1950s marked an era of post-war prosperity and social change, with the United States experiencing rapid suburbanization and cultural shifts. When McKay took over King Tut in 1955, Dwight D. Eisenhower was President and William C. Marland was Governor of West Virginia.
John McKay’s acquisition of King Tut brought fresh energy to the already popular establishment.
Owners Dave & Michelle McKay say the final days of business saw a lot of visitors, with the staff working extra hard to accommodate the influx of customers.
“Our King Tut family has been working in overdrive these last few weeks. They were tired and these last few who have stuck it out, have our deepest gratitude,” the McKays said.
As this journey for the McKays comes to a close, retirement is the next road ahead. They thanked the many who have sent them well wishes.
“So as we say goodbye, we hope that you will remember us fondly,” the McKays stated.
They said that they will soon post a date for a used equipment and memorabilia sale for those who are interested. They are also working with their t-shirt supplier on a final design as well as a cookbook.
The McKays say that they will keep individuals updated on those events via their Facebook page.
