LANSING, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Located within the New River Gorge sits a mysterious stone face that has left hikers and rock climbers wondering where in the world it came from.
The area in which the stone face sits is located a short walk off County Route 82 (Fayette Station Road) along a frequent hiking and rock climbing trail.
The rock has “May 1906” inscribed on it, but not too far from the stone face sits an inscription on another rock which states “JOHNSON 8 ‘54” which could also be attributed to the author of the stone face.
There is evidence that there were once homes or other structures located off of the road near the rock on which the stone face is inscribed. According to Historic Aerials, by 1957, the specific area looked uninhabited.
Local legend has it that a coal miner who worked at a nearby mine inscribed the face on the rock which was close to his residence.
These are the exact coordinates for the stone face: 38.067770, -81.070665.
It’s important to note that cell phone service in this part of the New River Gorge is extremely spotty.
