Charleston – Beckley advanced to the semifinal round of the West Virginia State Volleyball Tournament for the first time since 2018 with a 3-0 sweep of Bridgeport Wednesday morning inside the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.
The Flying Eagles started fast in set one taking a 9-2 advantage in the early going and led 19-10 before the Indians closed within three points late in them match. Beckley steadied the ship and held on for a 25-21 win.
Set two was an instant classic.
While the set was close the entire way, Beckley found itself down 22-18 before a 6-1 run placed it on brink of a crucial win.
The Indians did not go away quietly, however and moved back into tie at 24-24 to stay alive.
Following five ties and two led changes, Beckley scored the final two points and closed the set on a kill from Salia Harris for the win.
Riding the momentum, the Flying Eagles opened the third set on a 7-1 run and never trailed in a 25-17 win.
Beckley plays No. 1-seed Morgantown at 6:30 p.m. tonight. The Mohigans defeated Parkersburg South 3-0 in the second game of the morning session.
