BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – In a collaborative effort involving multiple agencies, organizations, individuals, and representatives from the City of Beckley, a Warming Center is set to open to provide shelter for those in need during harsh winter weather.
The Beckley Warming Center will be located in the Fellowship Hall of the Beckley Community United Methodist Church at 217 South Heber Street, Beckley, WV. It will operate from December 1, 2024, through March 31, 2025, on nights when the temperature, including wind chill, drops to 15 degrees Fahrenheit or lower.
The Warming Center will welcome guests starting at 8:00 p.m. and remain open overnight until 7:00 a.m. the following morning. If the cold weather persists, the Center will reopen nightly at 8:00 p.m.
To ensure the Center runs smoothly, a volunteer training session is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 21, in the Fellowship Hall of the Beckley Community United Methodist Church. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact United Way Executive Director Trena Dacal at tdacal@unitedwayswv.org. Volunteers will work in shifts from 7:30 p.m. to midnight, midnight to 4:00 a.m., and 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. on nights the Warming Center is open.
Additionally, residents seeking further assistance can turn to the Raleigh County Community Action Emergency Housing Center, located at 103 South Eisenhower Drive. This facility provides shelter, three hot meals, snacks, and emergency case management services.
The opening of the Beckley Warming Center represents a significant community effort to ensure safety and comfort for those facing the dangers of extreme cold weather.
