BLUEFIELD, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Substantial rainfall going into Memorial Day 2023 has left several areas throughout Bluefield and Mercer County heavily impacted by high levels of stormwater Monday morning.
Many residents throughout the county have documented heavy flooding conditions in areas such as Bluefield Avenue, College Avenue, and many more, with conditions in several areas prompting action from the city itself.
The City of Bluefield itself has offered a public notice encouraging residents to limit travel “due to major flooding issues” as storm water crews actively work to reduce the levels of water throughout the city.
The Town of Bluefield, Virginia has likewise issued a notice indicating that its Public Works Department is working to ensure the proper functionality of drains throughout the area to optimize the flow of water. It has been noted, however, that due to the degree of speed at which the rains have come, the drains themselves are struggling to sustain the flow of water.
“High water and flooding is happening throughout the town,” read the notice. “Our Public Works Department is out working to make sure drains are open and working properly to help with some of the water flow but it has come so fast that there is little they can do. Please be careful if you are out and encounter high waters.”
Those who can have been encouraged to remain inside their homes unless explicitly instructed to leave as a result of the ongoing flooding.
Word came on Sunday that the Memorial Day Ceremony originally scheduled to take place at 10:00am on Monday, May 29, 2023, in Chicory Square, Downtown Bluefield, WV, had been cancelled as a result of inclement weather.
