NICHOLAS COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A firefighter who was killed in a crash in Nicholas County over the weekend has been identified.
According to a criminal complaint, Brody Allan Hanna, a firefighter with the Nettie Fire Department, was killed after Dustin Young collided with his vehicle.
The complaint states that on Sunday, October 15th, 2023, at approximately 6:39 PM, West Virginia State Police Senior Trooper L.L. Cox, received a call from Nicholas County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) for a report of a motor vehicle crash on WV Route 55 in the Craigsville area of Nicholas County.
This crash consisted of a silver-colored Toyota Camry disabled with the operator being entrapped.
Nicholas EOC further advised they received an additional call that the operator exited the vehicle through the window stole a gray-colored Ford F-150 truck, belonging to a witness on the scene, and further began traveling toward Craigsville.
The vehicle was valued at approximately $41,000.00.
While en route, Nicholas EOC informed police that they had received an additional call for a report of a motor vehicle crash at 19 Carpenter Road in Craigsville involving the stolen vehicle.
The operator, identified as Dustin Dale Young, entered a residence at 19 Carpenter Road, after which he struck a woman in the head multiple times with a claw hammer.
Young then fled the scene in the stolen Ford F-150 and traveled toward Craigsville.
The victim was then transported by emergency medical services to receive treatment for her injuries.
The complaint further states that Young began traveling at a high rate of speed on WV State Route 41 toward Summersville. The accused collided with a vehicle, leading to the death of the operator, Brody Allan Hanna.
At this crash scene, the accused then stole a Summersville Police Department cruiser and began traveling at a high rate of speed on WV State Route 41 toward Craigsville.
Senior Trooper L.L. Cox then got behind the accused with emergency lights and sirens activated, after which the accused refused to stop.
The complaint alleges that Young was swerving all over the road and narrowly avoided several collisions with other vehicles, ultimately crashing on WV State Route 55 near Timber Oaks Drive.
Young was then removed from the vehicle and placed in mechanical restraints. The accused presented an extremely slurred speech with bloodshot-watery eyes.
Young then appeared to be losing consciousness and was administered one dose of Narcan.
