CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The first brick street in the world was laid in Charleston, West Virginia. The brick road was laid on Summers Street, but there isn’t much brick left to see nowadays.
Before brick roads, most streets were made out of dirt and gravel. In 1870, Mordecai Levi of Charleston decided to switch things up and attempt to try a new method of creating roads.
Levi saw success and even managed to construct a whole block of the road using brick. He eventually went through the process to get a U.S. patent for the method.
After Levi’s method was proved efficient, brick soon became a popular form of road construction.
The bricks used to construct roads were extremely durable and vitrified, a glazed type of brick that prevented corrosion. It allowed the roads to last for years.
There are many brick roads still located throughout the nation and globe although time and new methods have slowly erased their existence over the years.
