Wheeling – Just four years removed from winning the first state championship golf title in school history, Shady Spring was back in the winner’s circle Wednesday on the 18th green of the Jones Course at Oglebay Park.
After taking a 13-shot lead on the first day of the tournament, the Tigers fought off a slow start on day two, besting second place Wheeling Central by 17 shots. Chapmanville and Ripley tied, but were a distant third.
Junior Tyler Beard led Shady Spring with a second place overall finish, followed by fellow-junior Cooper Ward in third place. Senior Jack Williams came home fifth and freshman Grant Winkler was tied for seventh. All four players earned all-state honors.
