CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – In his first press conference as governor, Patrick Morrisey outlined his intention to issue a series of eight executive orders aimed at reshaping various aspects of West Virginia’s governance and policies.
While the governor shared an overview of each proposed order, the final language has not yet been made public.
Economic Competitiveness with Neighboring States
Governor Morrisey introduced the “Backyard Brawl” initiative as part of his first executive order, emphasizing the need for West Virginia to economically compete with neighboring states.
This directive will require cabinet officials and state agencies to compare the state’s regulations with those of surrounding states and identify opportunities for improvement.
Expansion of School Choice
The second executive order focuses on school choice, declaring it a priority of the Morrisey administration.
The governor pledged to support legislative efforts aimed at expanding educational options for West Virginia students.
Termination of DEI Policies
In the third executive order, Morrisey plans to direct all state agencies to eliminate any existing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies.
Fiscal Responsibility and Transparency
The fourth order will mandate a review of all state expenditures of $100,000 or more for the current fiscal year, as well as future expenses meeting that threshold.
Eliminating Inefficiencies
The fifth executive order will call for departments and agencies to evaluate their functions to identify and remove inefficiencies and redundancies.
Review of Rules and Regulations
Under the sixth executive order, all legislative rules and regulations created by state departments and agencies will be reviewed to ensure they align with current needs and priorities.
Religious Exemptions
The seventh executive order will implement the Equal Protection for Religion Act, allowing for religious exemptions, including exemptions from vaccines. Details on which vaccines this will apply to remain unclear.
Evaluation of Past Executive Orders
Finally, the eighth executive order will initiate a comprehensive review of all executive orders issued by previous administrations.
Further details on the orders are expected sometime today.
