CASS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Rail enthusiasts and nature lovers have a unique opportunity this winter to experience the breathtaking beauty of West Virginia’s snow-covered mountains aboard the Greenbrier Express Winter Special.
Running Saturdays and Sundays from January 18 to February 23, 2025, this scenic train ride takes passengers on a journey through the unspoiled wilderness of the Monongahela National Forest, offering a stunning winter landscape of frosted trees, frozen riverbanks, and towering peaks.
Departing from the historic town of Cass, the train closely follows the pristine Greenbrier River to the remote mountain village of Durbin.
Along the way, passengers can enjoy panoramic views of snow-draped forests and may even spot deer, river otters, eagles, and hawks in their natural habitat.
This five-hour round-trip excursion is perfect for anyone looking to enjoy the quiet beauty of winter in West Virginia.
Upon arrival in Durbin, passengers will be treated to a cold-cut lunch, which may be served onboard, in the depot, or at a local restaurant on Main Street, just steps from the station.
The train features enclosed, heated passenger cars, ensuring a warm and comfortable experience while still allowing for excellent views of the surrounding winter wonderland.
The Greenbrier Express follows a historic rail line originally built in 1902 by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway for timber transport.
After much of the route was abandoned in 1978 and heavily damaged by a flood in 1985, a successful public-private restoration effort brought it back to life.
Today, this segment of track provides a unique winter excursion in Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, one of West Virginia’s most treasured attractions.
