(LOOTPRESS) – This year, Americans are expected to break spending records as Halloween approaches, with total expenditures projected to surpass $12 billion.
According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), the average person will spend approximately $108, an increase from last year’s $103. This surge in spending reflects both the growing popularity of Halloween festivities and the rising costs of costumes, decorations, and candy.
Costumes remain the top spending category, with Americans projected to shell out over $4.1 billion on outfits for adults, children, and pets. In recent years, pet costumes have seen a notable rise in popularity, with nearly one in five pet owners planning to dress up their furry companions.
Decorations are also a major expense, as homes transform into spooky displays with elaborate setups featuring animatronics, inflatables, and themed lighting. Halloween decor spending is estimated to reach $3.9 billion this year, with many opting for more extravagant and immersive displays.
Candy, always a Halloween staple, is expected to account for nearly $3.6 billion of total spending. Rising food costs have contributed to this figure, with many families stocking up for the anticipated large crowds of trick-or-treaters.
With Halloween parties and themed events also becoming more widespread, spending on food, beverages, and party supplies is on the rise. Analysts note that this year’s high spending reflects a broader trend of Americans indulging in celebrations and traditions as life returns to normal after pandemic-related disruptions.
As shoppers prepare for the spooky season, retailers are bracing for a busy October, with many starting promotions earlier to capture consumer interest. Experts predict this will be a banner year for both brick-and-mortar stores and online sellers catering to Halloween enthusiasts.
