GRANT COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A hunter injured in a fall from a tree stand was rescued on Nov. 5, 2024, by the Maryland State Police Aviation Command (MSPAC) in a remote mountainous area of Grant County.
Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene around 7 a.m., but the rugged terrain and the severity of the hunter’s injuries required specialized assistance.
MSPAC’s Trooper 5 helicopter crew, based in Cumberland, Maryland, responded to the call, utilizing an AgustaWestland AW-139 helicopter to conduct an aerial hoist rescue.
A Trooper/Rescue Technician was lowered into a clearing to prepare the hunter for extraction using a patient extrication platform.
Ground crews, including emergency medical services and rescue personnel, provided patient care and assisted with the packaging process.
The helicopter crew successfully hoisted the hunter from the wooded area and transported him to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown for further treatment.
Since its inception in 1970, MSPAC has operated a fleet of 10 AW139 helicopters from seven bases across Maryland, offering medevac, law enforcement, search and rescue, and disaster assessment services.
The agency’s success depends on close collaboration with local fire, rescue, EMS, and law enforcement partners.
