WELCH, WV (LOOTPRESS) โ In response to the catastrophic flood that struck McDowell County in February, county officials are calling on state and federal agencies to take urgent action to restore local streams and rivers clogged with debris.
The McDowell County Commission passed a resolution on April 9, 2025, emphasizing the widespread destruction caused by the flood โ the worst in the countyโs recorded history, even surpassing the infamous 1977 flood.
The disaster led to the loss of lives, destroyed homes and businesses, and caused severe damage to roads and bridges. Recovery costs are expected to reach into the millions.
Commissioners stated that many waterways are still filled with debris and sediment, which restrict natural water flow and heighten the risk of future flooding.
In many areas, water now sits at or above road level, posing a continued threat to residents during rainfall.
โThe protection of human life and the prevention of future tragedies must take priority in emergency recovery efforts,โ the resolution states.
The commission is urgently requesting funding, regulatory waivers, and swift approvals for debris removal, creek bed stabilization, and the restoration of natural flow patterns.
The resolution will be sent to multiple agencies and leaders, including the President of the United States, the Governor of West Virginia, FEMA, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
County officials stressed that without immediate action, the region could face greater long-term damage and increased recovery costs.
In a Facebook post accompanied by the resolution, the commission stated that the โissue has gone unaddressed for far too long.โ
