PRINCETON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Mercer County Animal Shelter remains at Code Red status with the number of animals being housed outweighing the available resources to accommodate the furry residents.
Mercer County Animal Shelter announced last week that it had shifted to Code Red status with the shelter housing a staggering 86 dogs. To assist in alleviating the overflow, the shelter announced that adoption fees would be waived through the month of June, with Wednesday, July 31, 2024, being the final day fees can be waived.
As of Tuesday, July 30, 2024, MCAS reports that the shelter remains at Code Red status and that ten-to-fifteen dogs need to be adopted by the conclusion of the shelter’s ongoing Bissell Event, which continues through July.
Also shared was the unfortunate news that, should the shelter fail to move enough animals, they will be forced to begin euthanizing animals as early as Thursday.
Among animals available for adoption are medium and large dogs as well as cats and kittens. Additional details on how to adopt and a selection of available animals can be found at the Mercer County Animal Shelter Facebook page.
Mercer County Animal Shelter is the latest organization in recent weeks to indicate Code Red status due to an overflow of animals available for adoption. The Humane Society of Fayette County has been just one of several to reach out to members of the public for assistance in alleviating the issue.
