PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (LOOTPRESS) — A Florida man has been arrested and faces multiple charges after police found him naked inside an elementary school classroom with sex toys and marijuana. The suspect, identified as Joe Franklin Urias, 34, was apprehended after a chaotic encounter on the night of November 28 at Windmill Point Elementary School.
According to the arrest affidavit obtained by Law&Crime, police were called to the school after receiving reports of a naked man in one of the classrooms. When officers arrived, Urias reportedly dressed quickly and attempted to flee. A pursuit ensued, during which Urias resisted arrest and allegedly struck an officer in the face. Backup officers eventually subdued him and took him into custody.
Urias, who police say is homeless, admitted to breaking into the school through an unlocked window. In the classroom where he was first spotted, officers discovered several personal items, including sex toys, women’s underwear, and a container with a “leafy green substance” later identified as marijuana.
Urias was charged with burglary, possession of marijuana (under 20 grams), battery on an officer, and lewd and lascivious behavior. The affidavit cited his nudity and possession of explicit items as grounds for the lewdness charge.
Following Urias’ Thanksgiving night arrest, Somerset College Preparatory Academy, a local school where Urias had worked as a teacher, addressed the incident in a statement posted on Facebook. The academy clarified that Urias’ actions were “unrelated to our school” and emphasized its dedication to student safety.
“We want to emphasize that the safety and well-being of our students and community are our top priority,” the statement read. It also outlined the school’s vetting process for employees, assuring that background checks are conducted in collaboration with the local school district.
The academy confirmed that Urias would not return to its campus, stating, “We have handled this matter administratively and will take all necessary actions to ensure that this individual does not return to our campus.”
Urias is currently being held at the St. Lucie County Jail on a $31,000 bond. The case has raised concerns about school safety and background checks for educators. Further investigation into Urias’ past employment and actions is ongoing.
