Multiple sources confirmed to Lootpress that Wyoming East graduate and former Concord University basketball coach Kent McBride was named the fifth head coach of the Wyoming East boys basketball program during a Wyoming County Board of Education meeting Friday evening in Pineville.
McBride, a Wyoming East graduate, was a first team all-state guard on the 2002 state championship team that defeated Poca 72-62 in double overtime in the Class AA state title game for the first boys basketball title in school history.
After graduating from Wyoming East, McBride went on to play at Concord University, graduating in 2006. He took over as the program’s 14th head coach in 2011, guiding the Mountain Lions to the Mountain East Conference title in 2016, the first conference title for the program in 19 years.
McBride compiled an 83-63 record during his stint in Athens, taking the same job at California, Pa. following the 2016 season. He resigned from that post following the 2018 season.
McBride’s selection comes after former Wyoming East head coach Derek Brooks saw his contract terminated on Dec. 16. Brooks had been on administrative leave since November for an undisclosed reason. Coaching the team in his absence was assistant coach Herbie Brooks who led the Warriors to a 2-1 record through their first three games.
McBride will inherit the No. 7-ranked team in the latest coaches poll and will make his debut against county rival Westside on Saturday.
