Following Tuesday’s scuffle at the end of the Westside-Wyoming East boys basketball game the, sources have told Lootpress that the Wyoming County Board of Education has elected to suspend future contests between the two teams, boys and girls, until the conclusion of next season.
With 12 seconds left in Tuesday’s game, a shoving match broke out near the Westside bench between a Wyoming East player and another Westside player. The incident spilled over into the bench area before law enforcement and administration sorted it out.
The game had been on the chopping block previously with an open forum held at Pineville Middle School in 2020. The options to discontinue the game or move it to the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center were presented but administration elected to keep the games intact.
Factoring into the decision was the fact the teams, which had met 11 times over the previous three seasons, would be in different classifications with East staying in Class AA and Westside playing up and moving to Class AAA.
With the WVSSAC’s two-year trail period of the four class system up for renewal, teams like Westside, which elected to play up, can move back down to Class AA. In all likelihood both teams would be paired in the same region and could meet next February or March in the sectional or regional tournament.
And it just got ugly…
