MADISON- Landon Stone accounted for three touchdowns and Matt Frye threw for two more as Scott dominated Liberty 41-14 on homecoming Friday night at Scott Field.
Scott, ranked 15th in the latest West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission Class AA ratings, held sixth-ranked Liberty to minus-5 yards and no first downs through three quarters.
Liberty, who had won four-in-a-row, finished with 78 yards of total offense and just six first downs. The Skyhawks defense held Liberty’s leading rusher, Logan Dodrill, to just 10 yards on 15 carries.
“Coach (Shann) Elkins and coach (Eric) McClung put together a heck of a gameplan,” Scott coach Jeremy Dolin said. “We watched a lot of film on them, and we knew they were kind of physical.”
“We schemed for them, set our defensive front the way that we felt like would work best for them,” Dolin said.
Scott rolled up 407 yards of total offense, including 281 on the ground as Cooper Martin rushed for 137 yards on 18 carries and Stone added 73 yards on 12 rushing attempts. Frye completed 8-of-his-13 passes for 126 yards with Carson Brinegar hauling in three passes for 42 yards while Stone had three catches for 39 yards.
“Cooper and Landon were really able to pound the ball,” Dolin said. “We knew coming into tonight that we could probably work in space and that was the goal to run some more bubbles and slants.”
Following an Isaiah Brown interception on Liberty’s first possession of the game, Scott drove 35 yards in six plays capped off by Stone’s 4-yard touchdown with 6:47 remaining in the first quarter to give the Skyhawks a 7-0 lead.
A Raider three-and-out would give the ball back to the Skyhawks at their own 39. Six plays later Frye found Stone for an 18-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 14-0 with 2:13 remaining.
Stone’s third touchdown of the first half gave the Skyhawks a 21-0 lead at halftime. Stone’s night wasn’t done as he was crowned Scott High School Homecoming King at halftime.
“He (Stone) had a heck of a night,” Dolin said. “Maybe his girlfriend will buy him dinner to top it off.”
In the third quarter, Frye ran in from one yard out and connected with Isaiah Bush for a 27-yard touchdown to extend Scott’s lead to 34-0 after three quarters.
Liberty got on the board in the fourth quarter as Connor Bradford scored on an 18-yard run and Resean Simms scoped up a Kyle Fox fumbled and raced 72 yards for the Raiders final touchdown,
Fox would close out the scoring for the Skyhawks with a 35-yard touchdown run.
“I was talking to Glen Frye, the offensive coordinator, and told him let’s give him another chance,” Dolin said. ”He ran it hard, but of course I chewed him pretty good as I do with all the backs about taking care of the football.”
Bradford rushed for 44 yards on four carries while Peyton Pettry ran for 20 yards on four attempts and Clayton Williams added 15 yards on six carries for Liberty.
The Raiders, who were tied for sixth with Lincoln, drop to 4-2 and will take a hit in Tuesday’s ratings.
“You got to win in October to play in November,” Liberty coach Mark Workman said. “Yes this is a hit, but we got to bounce back, and I am not going to worry about the ratings until they come out Tuesday.”
The Raiders will travel to James Monroe next week to battle the Mavericks, who have won five straight after a season-opening loss to Sherman.
“They are a tough single-A team, and we got to come out and be physical,” Workman said. “If we are physical I think we win, and if we are not, we are going to beat.”
With the win, the Skyhawks will climb in Tuesday’s ratings, but how far remains to be seen at this point.
“It’s one game at a time, we don’t have time to sit and be too happy about where we are at,” Dolin said. “I tried to tell them that going into the Logan game, and I think we got a little wake-up call.”
The Skyhawks will travel to Poca Friday night to face the second-ranked Dots.
“We got to break down film and get ready to go play Poca,” Dolin said. “They got a really good player in Toby Payne, got the Jones kid at tailback and they got a really nice offensive line.”
