The WVSSAC Board of Control elected to adopt two proposals Thursday afternoon after a meeting at Stonewall Resort.
WVSSAC associate executive director Wayne Ryan confirmed to Lootpress that proposals to reclassify schools every two years instead of every four passed as well as one submitted by Spring Valley that tweaks the formula used to classify schools.
In short, classifications are enrollment based but will utilize a metric called modified enrollment. Under the modified enrollment format, certified direct students (those eligible for free or reduced lunch) count for half a student. If a school has 1,000 students and 500 are certified direct, the modified enrollment would be 750 kids. Schools with 900 kids after modified enrollment are grouped in Class AAAA, 899-500 in triple-A, 499-250 in double-A and 249 and below would be grouped into single-A.
The proposals will be open for comment before the state board of education votes on it in December. Should the proposals fail to pass, the process will begin anew. Should they pass theyโll go into effect at the start of the 2025-26 school year.
Attached below is the full proposal presented by Spring Valley and first reported by Lootpress on Tuesday as well as an example of where schools would be classified under the proposed model.
