UPDATE: SHADY SPRING, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Following a weekend announcement confirming the cancellation of Shady Spring’s annual Homecoming Parade, it was announced Monday morning that the school will move forward with the parade as scheduled.
Many Raleigh County residents expressed disquiet upon learning of the parade’s initial cancellation, which purportedly occurred due to guidelines presented to the school by the Department of Highways’ Traffic Engineering Division which reportedly could not be met.
Delegate Brandon Steele was vocal is his opposition to the cancellation of the beloved community event, calling the decision “unthinkable.”
“This parade has been a mainstay of the community for years, and includes the High School, Middle School, and Shady Spring Youth Athletics,” Steele asserted. “It is a homecoming celebration for the entirety of Southeastern Raleigh County.”
Delegate Steele was quick to make contact with the governor’s staff in an attempt to resolve the issue hindering the event.
Monday’s announcement confirmed that the school had been in contact with the DOH and that the parade would move forward as intended.
“We have been working with the Department of Highways and the traffic engineering department,” the statement read.
“We WILL proceed with the parade Wednesday, September 21st at 6:30 PM on the traditional route.”
Details regarding which, if any, changes were made to allow for this development have not been made available at this time.
But as it stands currently, the residents of Raleigh County can breathe a well-deserved sigh of relief, as one of those most highly anticipated events in the local community will be moving forward.
