VERDUNVILLE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – New information was released Tuesday afternoon after a deadly shooting in Logan County Monday morning.
The Logan County Sheriff’s Office released a statement on its Facebook page after two parents were shot and killed by their son, who was later killed in a standoff in Mingo County.
The sheriff’s office said they received a call from Logan County 911 regarding a shooting at approximately 11:32 a.m. on Brogue Drive near the Dingess Mountain area of Verdunville.
While in route to the scene, deputies were notified that two victims were shot and killed and that the suspect had left the scene.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they found Shawn and Karen Sue Dempsey, 52, dead from gunshot wounds.
Witnesses at the scene told deputies that the couple’s son, Shawn Delenore Dempsey, 32, was seen in the area prior to shots being fired and was observed to be leaving the scene in his parents’ silver SUV.
Witnesses also told deputies that an argument between Dempsey and his parents ensued before the shooting.
The Logan County Sheriff’s Office, Mingo County Sheriff’s Office, Mingo and Wayne detachments for the West Virginia State Police and West Virginia Division of Natural Resources assisted in the search for Dempsey.
He was spotted in Wayne County and led police on a pursuit in the direction of Twelve Pole Creek in Mingo County, where Logan and Mingo County Deputies set up a roadblock near Cub Branch.
The suspect drove through the roadblock, striking a Logan County Sheriff’s Department cruiser and continuing to Mare Drive where the suspect’s vehicle was rendered immobile.
The release states that the suspect brandished a weapon and fired at Mingo County deputies, who returned fire killing the suspect.
The Logan County Sheriff’s Department is conducting a murder investigation while the West Virginia State Police is investigating the officer involved shooting.
