Charleston – It’s a clean sweep for the Grizzlies.
A day after Adrienne Truman claimed the Class AA girls high jump championship, her classmate Isaiah Miner did the same on the boys side.
Miner cleared a height of 6-foot-2 to claim the boys Class AA high jump state championship Saturday afternoon at Laidley Field in Charleston.
The win comes after disappointing finishes the last two years where Miner finished second in the state meet.
As a freshman he fell two inches short of winning the title and last year finished second to Westside’s Owen Keeney, a kid who was participating in track and field for the first time in his career.
“It’s about time,” Miner laughed. “I should’ve won I the first year too but I got in my mind bad.”
Miner had his bumps Saturday, failing to clear six foot on his first attempt but that was his only miss before attempting 6-foot-4 with the title already in hand.
“Well I don’t think I had the confidence at first and I didn’t think I was gonna win it at because I had a rough practice before,” Miner said. And then I just put everything away and just did it.”
Despite claiming the win, Miner still wasn’t satisfied. He struggled through the season and didn’t reach his PRs as he had in years past. But he did what he needed to when it mattered most.
“This season has been rough for me,” Miner said. “I’m not jumping, like I did last year. But I think I’ll get it fixed for next year. My approach, it’s different for some reason but I’ll get it fixed.”
