HARPER’S FERRY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Mountain State has become known for many things, including its scenic views, rolling mountains, and hospitality. But some may be surprised to learn that West Virginia has also made an impact in the world of sweets.
Indeed, one West Virginia candy shop was ranked alongside the world’s largest candy store and a candy museum, to name a few, in a national top 5 ranking recently shared by Fox News.
The ranking, which also includes establishments based in Ohio, New Hampshire, California, and Connecticut, sees representation of stores deemed, “delectable destinations for sweet family memories.”
The Mountain State is represented by a local shop in Harper’s Ferry known as True Treats. Founded by writer and historian of the world of sweets, Susan Benjamin, True Treats is said to be, “the nation’s only research-based candy store.”
The store is said to house, “over 500 historic teas, candies, and confections,” with each item carrying its own unique story which is touched upon at the True Treats website as well as owner Susan Benjamin’s book, ‘Sweet as Sin: The Unwrapped Story of How Candy Became America’s Favorite Pleasure’, available through Rowman & Littlefield.
True Treats has been referenced on the television show, Jeopardy, The History Channel’s Food That Built America, PBS’s Travel’s with Darley series, and the Boardwalk Empire television series, just to name a few.
Benjamin offers a unique perspective on the sweets and treats which we all know and love, viewing them not just as delicious snacks, but also as gateways to the past.
