MARION, VA (LOOTPRESS) – A Virginia law enforcement officer with the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office was killed in the line of duty on Friday.
According to a statement from the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office, 27-year-old Deputy Hunter Reedy tragically lost his life in the line of duty on Friday, August 9, 2024.
Deputy Reedy was a seven-year veteran officer, having begun his in 2017 as a member of the Chilhowie Police Department before arriving at the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office in 2021.
Deputy Reedy is reported to have been killed in the line of duty following a traffic stop which ended in gunfire, with Deputy Fedorchuk having also been injured after having been struck by gunfire during the incident.
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin issued remarks with regard to the tragic incident, urging members of the public to keep the families of those involved in their thoughts and prayers.
“It’s a stark reminder that our law enforcement heroes risk their lives every day and his bravery and commitment to protecting and serving the Smyth County community will never be forgotten,” said Youngkin of the fallen law enforcement officer. “During this difficult time, we stand united in support our entire law enforcement community and their families.”
A candlelight vigil held in the Marion, Virginia area on Sunday in Deputy Reedy’s honor saw attendance from an overwhelming number of community members who made their way out to honor and remember the deputy.
Deputy Reedy leaves behind a wife and three children.
