WYOMING COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A traffic stop on New Year’s Eve led to the arrest of two individuals on multiple drug-related charges after West Virginia State Police Troopers discovered illegal substances and drug paraphernalia in their vehicle.
At approximately 6:40 PM, a trooper traveling along Stephenson-Basin Road observed a red BMW emitting steam from its engine, parked roadside. Upon approaching the vehicle with emergency lights activated, the trooper found two occupants: Joshua Lee Austin in the driver’s seat and Courtney Jane Mullens in the passenger seat.
When asked about the vehicle’s condition, Mr. Austin explained it was overheating. However, the trooper noticed a glass pipe commonly associated with illegal drug use at Austin’s feet. After being instructed to exit the vehicle, Austin was detained and allegedly admitted he had been cleaning the pipe in preparation for use.
On the passenger side, Ms. Mullens attempted to conceal a silver canister in her seat as she exited the vehicle. She was also detained by the trooper.
Search Reveals Drugs, Paraphernalia, and Cash
A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a blue canister containing a white powdery substance, later identified as cocaine. Ms. Mullens’ canister contained a multicolored substance she identified as heroin and a mixture of crack cocaine. Her purse also held a bowl with a foil-wrapped, crystal-like substance, which she identified as methamphetamine.
Additional items found in the vehicle included plastic baggies, a set of scales in the glove box, and $1,667 in cash on Mr. Austin, who could not provide a clear explanation of its origin.
Ms. Mullens claimed the drugs belonged to Mr. Austin, alleging he asked her to hide them as the trooper approached the vehicle.
Vehicle Violations and License Revocation
The vehicle was found to lack proof of insurance, a valid West Virginia Motor Vehicle Inspection Sticker, and had a broken driver’s side mirror. A check of Mr. Austin’s license revealed it was revoked due to a prior DUI conviction in Raleigh County, WV.
Arrests and Charges
Both individuals were arrested and transported to the Jesse Detachment without incident.
Ms. Mullens faces four counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and four counts of drug conspiracy. Mr. Austin’s charges were not specified in the initial report but include possession of a controlled substance and vehicle violations.
The seized drugs and cash were secured as evidence, and the case remains under investigation.
