SIMON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Randy Lee Hurley, 57, of Simon, pleaded guilty to burglary on January 22, 2025.
The charge stems from an incident on October 28, 2024, when Corporal Jacob Ellison and Deputy Matt Perry of the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department responded to a burglary in progress in the Hanover area.
Upon arrival, Deputy Perry spoke with the homeowner, who stated he had been alerted remotely by his security cameras that an intruder was inside his unoccupied residence.
The homeowner identified Hurley on the video footage.
Deputies discovered that an air conditioner unit had been removed to gain entry into the home. Inside, they found Hurley attempting to hide in an effort to avoid detection.
Wyoming County Prosecutor Gregory Bishop emphasized the serious nature of burglary.
“Burglary is a traumatic experience for homeowners because most people consider their home an extension of themselves,” said Bishop. “We must and will seek harsh punishment for such intrusions into our most sacred place—the home.”
Assistant Prosecutor Derek Laxton led the case before Wyoming County Circuit Judge Josh Miller.
Bishop commended Laxton, the prosecutorial staff, and the deputies involved for their thorough work on the case.
A former State Trooper himself, Bishop also highlighted the risks law enforcement officers face when responding to crimes in progress.
Hurley is scheduled to be sentenced in March 2025.
Under state law, burglary is punishable by one to 15 years in the custody of the Department of Corrections.
